Cleaning and Storing Jewelry Properly
Jewelry are considered investments. Among your properties, jewelry does not depreciate and only increases in value over time. Proper care and storage of your jewelry are very important to keep them always sparkling for any occasion.
Many people use toothpaste or dish washing soap in cleaning jewelry. However, these are best left for kitchen use. They may be harsh and only cause stones to lose their sparkle. You should use sudsy solutions in cleaning jewelry. Start off by soaking your jewelry in warm sudsy water for an hour or so. Then rinse your jewelry in running water and use a clean absorbent fabric to dry them. You can use a soft small brush to remove any grime or grease accumulated in nooks and crannies. On the other hand, if you will need to remove greasy residues on diamonds, you can soak it in alcohol for a couple of minutes and afterwards you can run them on water.
In using commercial cleaners like an ultrasonic cleaner, extra caution is advised as they may damage jewelry when not used correctly. Ultrasonic cleaners are not advisable to be used on Tanzanite, Opals and Emeralds.
For storing jewelry, you should consider the materials they are made of and the hardness, too. Diamonds are hard to scratch but may scratch others as well; it is best to separate them from other items. Velvet, felt, and cotton are best for pearls and other delicate jewelry. Pouches or individual containers are just the thing to separate jewelry storage. Proper storage of jewelry can greatly preserve its brilliance.
